Immigration Rights

Immigration Rights and Our Commitment to Lawful, Humane Pathways to Citizenship

Our community is strengthened by the people who come here seeking safety, opportunity, and a fair chance to build a better life. We support every individual who pursues citizenship through lawful, established pathways—and we believe those pathways must be accessible, transparent, and rooted in human dignity.

At the same time, we cannot ignore the documented concerns raised across the country about the mistreatment of immigrants and asylum seekers. No agency, including ICE, is exempt from accountability. We condemn any actions that violate human rights, including coercion, abuse, discrimination, or the denial of due process. Protecting our borders and upholding our laws must never come at the expense of a person’s humanity.

Our stance is clear:

  • We support lawful, structured, and fair immigration processes that help individuals become citizens the right way.
  • We oppose any form of abuse, harassment, or rights violations committed under the guise of enforcement.
  • We advocate for oversight, transparency, and humane treatment for all individuals in immigration custody.
  • We believe in policies that reflect both national security and compassion.

America’s strength has always come from its diversity and its commitment to justice. Our immigration system should reflect those values—not undermine them.

Staying Safe When Interacting With ICE

Your Rights During Any ICE Encounter

You do not have to open the door

ICE cannot enter a home without a judicial warrant signed by a judge. Administrative ICE forms (I‑200, I‑205) do not authorize entry.

You have the right to remain silent

You do not have to answer questions about:

  • Immigration status
  • Place of birth
  • How you entered the country

A simple statement is enough: “I choose to remain silent.”

You have the right to refuse consent

You do not have to:

  • Let officers inside
  • Allow a search
  • Sign documents you do not understand

You may request to speak with an attorney before signing anything.

How to Stay Safe in the Moment

Stay calm and do not run

Remaining still and composed helps prevent escalation.

Ask to see identification and any warrant

You may view documents through a closed door or window. Check for:

  • A judge’s signature
  • Your correct name and address
  • The words “Search Warrant” or “Arrest Warrant”

Communicate through a closed door

You can speak through:

  • A door
  • A window
  • A security camera or intercom

You do not have to open the door to exercise your rights.

Digital and Communication Safety

  • Use strong passwords and two‑factor authentication.
  • Avoid posting real‑time location information.
  • Be cautious of unknown calls or messages requesting personal details.
  • Keep copies of important documents in a secure place.

Document the Encounter

If safe to do so:

  • Write down badge numbers, names, dates, and times.
  • Save any paperwork ICE leaves.
  • Record audio or video if permitted by state law.
  • Share information with a trusted legal or community organization.

Documentation protects you and helps hold agencies accountable.

Community Safety Matters

We encourage families and neighborhoods to prepare together:

  • Create emergency contact plans.
  • Share “Know Your Rights” materials in multiple languages.
  • Connect with reputable legal aid organizations.
  • Build community alert systems to keep one another informed.

Safety is strongest when it is shared.

Our Commitment

We support lawful, humane, and transparent pathways to citizenship, and we oppose any actions—by any agency—that violate human rights or due process. We stand with every individual seeking safety, stability, and dignity.
